Russia, India ink cooperation MoU with Bangladesh on Rooppur N-plant
Russia, India and Bangladesh signed a trilateral agreement to cooperate in the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh, work on which started late last year.
- Indian companies can be involved in construction and installation works, the supply of materials and equipment of a non-critical category for the project.
Cabinet approves continuation PMEGP beyond 12th Plan for three years from 2017-18 to 2019-20
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the PM Narendra Modi approved the continuation of Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) beyond 12th Plan for three years from 2017-18 to 2019-20.
- The program outlay is proposed at Rs.5,500 crore.
- Scheme will create sustainable estimated employment opportunities for 15 lakh persons in three financial years.
- The Scheme is aimed at generating self-employment opportunities through establishment of micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector by helping traditional artisans and unemployed youth in rural as well as urban areas.
Government received taxes of Rs.1163386 Cr. up to January 2018
The Monthly account of the government of India up to February 2018 recorded a higher transfer of central taxes to the state governments as compared to the corresponding period the last year.
- The government of India has received Rs.11,63,386 crore (71.7 percent of corresponding RE 17-18 of total receipts) up to January 2018 comprising Rs. 9,71,323 crore tax revenue (net to centre), Rs. 1,24,364 crore of non-tax revenue and Rs. 67,699 crore of non-debt capital receipts.
- Further, non-debt capital receipts consist of recovery of loans, amounting to Rs. 12,156 crore and disinvestment of Public Sector Units (PSUs), amounting to Rs. 55,543 crore.
Telangana launches integrated app for all government services
The Telangana government launched an m-Governance mobile application called ‘T App Folio’ to help citizens with one point access to government services like MeeSeva services, RTA services, fee payments and bill payment services etc.
- All public services in Telangana will now be delivered over mobile phone with the launch of this official digital application of the state.
- Telangana has become the second state in India after Karnataka to launch anywhere, anytime, mobile service delivery gateway for all the departments.
27th Technological Conference of IJIRA starts in Kolkata
Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani attended the 27th Technological Conference of Indian Jute Industries’ Research Association (IJIRA) on Shaping the Future of Jute in Kolkata, West Bengal.
- The function was focused on the promotion of geotextiles in the northeast region. Geotextiles are absorbent fabrics which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain.

Huawei unveils world’s first 5G commercial chip
Chinese mobile giant Huawei has unveiled its first 5G chip named Balong 5G01, which the company claims is the world’s first commercial chipset that meets the latest 5G standards.
ECONOMY
India’s Q3 GDP grows at 7.2%, becomes world’s fastest growing economy
According to an official data, India’s GDP for the third quarter of 2017-18 grew at 7.2 per cent. The GDP growth during the second quarter of the fiscal was at 6.5 per cent.
- With this India has replaced China as world’s fastest growing economy, which grew 6.8 percent in October-December 2017.

Tokyo unveils mascots for 2020 Olympic Games
A pair of futuristic superheroes triumphed in the race to become mascots for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- It is the first time in Olympic history that pupils have the final say in selecting the mascot. The names of the mascots are yet to be decided.
- The Olympic Mascot is a fox-like creature with blue and white checks.
- The pink-checked Paralympic Mascot is derived from the attractive cherry blossom of Japan.

R Subrahmanyam appointed higher education secretary
Senior IAS officers R Subrahmanyam and Anil Gopishankar Mukim have been appointed as secretaries of Higher Education, and Mines Department respectively, as part of a major bureaucratic reshuffle.
OBITUARY
Odia Bhajan singer Arabinda Muduli passes away
Noted Odia Bhajan singer Arabinda Muduli has passed away following a cardiac arrest. He was 56. A musician, singer and lyricist, Muduli enthralled the audience with devotional songs and had won the hearts of millions of people in Odisha and elsewhere.
